Aether

Aetherby Mads Emil Dreyer & Scenatet
Taking inspiration from sources as diverse as the aerial spaciousness characteristic of Symbolist painter Eugène Carrière, the philosopher Martin Heidegger’s conception of the empty space as the place where beings come into presence, as well as the physicality of the music at Berlin’s most iconic techno club, Berghain, ‘Aether’ is an act of world-building as much as it is a performance.
Created by composer Mads Emil Dreyer and performers from the ensemble Scenatet, ‘Aether’ is a musical and visual exploration of the invisible circumstances which any community is inherently predicated on: The atmosphere in which our bodies are always already submerged; the endless reserves of air, which we share through our common breathing.
Like the music at a techno club – which does not intend to tell a story but rather establishes a specific room – the music of ‘Aether’ is a multidimensional space, establishing the conditions necessary for a specific mode of being in the world.
The musical performers are placed in each corner of a quadratic room, thus enclosing the audience lying on pillows in the middle of the room with sounds, lights, and visual projections. The audience is transformed into a stage of bodies on which the music acts – united by the common experience of existing in a shared aetheric space.
Premiere November 2026.
