Ceremonier

Ceremonierby Simon Løffler & Scenatet
The Umwelt theory posits that every living organism experiences a uniquely subjective reality in which it itself is the center. In ‘Ceremonies’, composer Simon Løffler and performers from the ensemble Scenatet explore the musical implications of this idea.
The work explores the extent to which the subjective sensorial experiences of non-human organisms also entail unique forms of musical expression: the rhythmic, dance-like mating rituals of the butterfly; the theatrical fate of the moth as it is fatally subsumed by its desire for the flame; the resonating cavity of the frog’s inflatable body. As such, ‘Ceremonies’ is a continuation of Løffler’s exploration of the body as instrument which began with ‘Animalia’ (2022-24).
Transgressing preconceived boundaries – not only between nature and culture, but also between the musical, the mechanic, and the corporeal – the performance invites the audience into a harmonious whole where the interconnectedness between species is foregrounded.
This transgression of boundaries extends to the staging of the concert itself, which takes place inside as well as outside of the delineated performance space. The work, thus, is characterized by a constant mutability, forcing the audience to constantly readjust their senses.
Premiere at Darmstädter Ferienkurse July 2027.
