Osmosis

After the critically acclaimed Memoriam — which, set in a futuristic universe, offered us a poetic vision of the future conveyed in equal parts music and theatre — the team is back with a new, ambitious work. With Osmosis, composer Niels Rønsholdt, choreographer Tim Matiakis and director Anna Berit Asp Christensen invite us to reflect on the human powerlessness and humility that are porous parts of ourselves, set against the larger systems and forces that surround us.

Through a cross‑disciplinary lens, Osmosis is a music‑dramatic piece that blurs the line between stage and auditorium. Sounds, voices and movements gradually spread in an act of resistance against the barriers that seek to dictate our lives and conditions. Through supplications, repetitions, traces of movement and shifting physical encounters, three singers, two dancers and a guitarist challenge our understanding of — and our ability to control — the reality that surrounds us. At varying tempi, the piece weaves reminiscences of classical Western liturgical music with melodic and phrasal elements drawn from soul and pop.

As a consortium, the sensory and the relational merge into an inverted nature when Osmosis allows elements to diffuse into one another, so that influence, assertion, doubt, surrender and possible renewal emerge. The density and mutability of nature give us a sense of being outside time and place and help shift our perception from one moment to the next.

In a world driven by political and strategic solutions, Osmosis offers a counterpoint: a sensorial space where feeling and reflection awaken new questions, a sensitivity to possible change, and a bodily language for responsibility and relation.

Osmosis is a new way of thinking and feeling together.
